About Leigh Newton

(March 2008 update: Leigh is currently teaching in Azerbaijan, so is not available for touring)

Leigh Newton is a songwriter/entertainer from SA who works in both secular and Christian contexts. Although best known as a children's songwriter he also writes for adults and performs to all ages at family concerts.

In addition to songwriting and singing Leigh uses juggling, magic and ventriloquism, and performs regularly in kid's clubs, kindergartens, schools and churches. He presents seminars for music leaders in churches and works in schools on behalf of local churches presenting Christian Option seminars.

Born in Broken Hill NSW, Leigh grew up singing in choirs, and learning piano and guitar. As a teenager he played professionally in cabaret ensembles and folk duos. In the 1980's he played in the popular Adelaide bush band Three Corner Jack.

Since that time he has released nine albums variously for adults and children, probably being most known around Australia for Christmas In The Scrub which places the Christmas story firmly in the Australian culture. Its sequel Christmas in the Shed was published Nov '99.

Leigh's songs have been reproduced in more than 30 different publications for both children and adults, secular and Christian. He is also a winner of the annual South Australian State Folk Festival Songwriting Award.
